During her conversation with Vivek Law, Venkatkrishnan explained that changing human behaviour is one of the most difficult challenges in finance.

According to her, fear is often the biggest obstacle to both personal and financial growth. Many people avoid taking risks because they are afraid of failure. This is why mentors and financial advisors play such an important role. They provide guidance, support, and reassurance, helping individuals develop confidence while accepting that setbacks are a natural part of any journey.

Drawing from studies on human behaviour, Venkatkrishnan pointed out that nearly 75% of human thoughts tend to be negative. Unfortunately, people focus heavily on those negative thoughts while ignoring the remaining positive ones.

This mindset often influences investment decisions. One of the most common questions she hears from clients is, “Will I lose my money?”

For Venkatkrishnan, optimism is essential in both life and investing. She compares market volatility to the fluctuations on an ECG monitor. Just as a flat line on an ECG indicates the absence of life, market fluctuations are a sign of a healthy and functioning financial system. Problems will always arise, but solutions will follow.

Why Does Roopa Venkatkrishnan Believe India Is Entering a Wealth-Creation Phase?

Venkatkrishnan remains highly optimistic about India’s future and believes the country is entering a powerful wealth-creation cycle that could continue for the next 15 to 20 years.

According to her, India is moving along a completely different growth trajectory, supported by strong entrepreneurship, rising domestic consumption, and a young, ambitious population.

She also believes that wealth fundamentally changes people’s behaviour. Financial security creates comfort, reduces fear, and gives individuals the confidence to take calculated risks, including changing careers or pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities.

One of her strongest messages is that escaping poverty is possible within a decade through disciplined investing.

Even a monthly SIP of ₹500 to ₹1,000 can gradually create meaningful wealth if maintained consistently over a long period.

Why Don’t Most Investors Experience the True Power of Compounding?

According to Venkatkrishnan, the mutual fund industry has generated enormous wealth over the past three decades. Some funds have grown from a net asset value (NAV) of ₹10 to nearly ₹4,000.

However, she believes very few investors have truly benefited from this growth.

The reason lies in the difference between fund returns and investor returns.

While funds may deliver exceptional long-term performance, many investors enter and exit at the wrong time, preventing them from experiencing the full benefits of compounding.

She advises investors to remain realistic about their expectations and estimates that equities can generate long-term returns of approximately 12-14%.

At the same time, she reminds investors to prepare for market corrections of 30-50%, which may occur several times over a 20- to 30-year investment journey.

How Can Better Money Management Prevent Financial Stress?

Venkatkrishnan believes that poor money management is one of the biggest financial challenges facing young Indians today.

Easy access to credit and the increasing popularity of EMIs have encouraged many people to purchase products they cannot afford, leading them into debt traps.

According to her, financial discipline is the foundation of a healthy financial life.

She recommends dividing income into three categories:

20% for savings and investments.

50% for immediate expenses.

30% for future discretionary purchases.

For example, instead of purchasing an expensive smartphone through credit, people should gradually save money over several months before making the purchase.

She also explains that many financial mistakes occur because people fail to separate money according to different goals, including immediate needs, short-term goals, medium-term plans, and long-term wealth creation.

Why Should Financial Coaching Become a Part of Indian Culture?

One of the most significant behavioural changes Venkatkrishnan wants to see in India is the normalisation of conversations about money.

She points out that previous generations rarely discussed finances openly within families. As a result, many people grew up without understanding basic financial concepts.

She compares financial advisors to coaches in sports, music, and dance.

Just as people hire experts to improve their physical or creative abilities, they should also seek professional guidance to improve their financial well-being.

According to her, financial advice should not be viewed as a luxury reserved for wealthy individuals. Everyone, regardless of how much they earn or invest, can benefit from financial coaching.

How Did Personal Struggles Shape Roopa Venkatkrishnan’s Financial Philosophy?

Venkatkrishnan’s journey into financial planning was deeply influenced by her own experiences.

After feeling dissatisfied with her early career around 1989, she joined Times Guarantee Financials as a secretary.

One of the defining moments in her life came when her father, despite paying for her education, refused to help her find a job and encouraged her to build her career independently.

Although the experience was emotionally painful, it became a turning point.

Her first job paid just ₹300 while working at a petrol pump. She experienced financial hardship firsthand and learned an important lesson: after oxygen, one of the most fundamental human needs is food, and earning money is essential for survival.

Those experiences shaped her understanding of resilience, patience, discipline, and failure.

Today, she firmly believes that mutual funds are among the best investment vehicles for people who do not have the knowledge or time to analyse stock markets.

Her life’s mission is simple but deeply personal: to ensure that the people she guides do not “die poor,” because she understands the pain of financial struggle better than most.

Roopa Venkatkrishnan, Director of Sapient Wealth Advisors & Brokers and Director of the Foundation of Independent Financial Advisors (FIFA), shares valuable insights on investor psychology, wealth creation, financial discipline, and the emotional side of money management on Simple Hai!, the financial podcast hosted by Vivek Law.
