Speaking to senior finance journalist Vivek Law, he explained how India’s economic progress has shifted investor behaviour from “scarcity thinking” to “adequacy thinking.”

When Kapoor entered the industry in the mid-1990s, India was still in the early stages of economic reform. Investors were more safety-conscious because they had limited financial room to take risks.

Today, with per capita GDP nearly 10 times higher than 25 years ago, Kapoor believes investors can afford to take greater risks and participate more actively in wealth creation.

Why Are Investors Still Struggling With Long Holding Periods?

When Law raised the issue of investors stopping SIPs during market corrections, Kapoor acknowledged that challenges remain, but said investor maturity has improved considerably.

Over the past four to five years, market volatility has had only a “mild” impact on SIP flows compared with 15–16 years ago. He attributed this to India’s economic progress and greater awareness created by the media, regulators and digital content.

However, the bigger challenge remains the length of time investors stay invested. Kapoor noted that almost half of equity investors exit within two to three years, despite advice to remain invested for much longer.

“In chasing returns, we end up compounding the issue,” he said, warning that excessive activity can actually destroy investment returns. A quality fund held for 20–25 years, he added, could deliver significantly better outcomes than constantly switching between investments.

Why Should Investors Stop Waiting for the “Right Time”?

Law observed that people are often careful about spending but make poor investment decisions, frequently buying at high levels and selling when markets fall.

Kapoor said one reason is the misconception that investors need a large amount of money to begin. Even with as little as ₹50, he explained, people can start their investment journey.

Waiting for the “right time” or looking for a “tip” only delays wealth creation. “You have to start early; don’t keep procrastinating with these types of arguments,” Kapoor advised.

The message, he stressed, is simple: the earlier investors begin, the more time they give compounding to work.

How Can SWP Help Investors Achieve Financial Freedom?

Law highlighted Bandhan’s investor-focused campaigns, including the “Salary Wala Plan”, which he had personally used. Kapoor described the Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) as a “powerful feature” that allows investors to withdraw a regular amount while the remaining corpus continues to compound.

“Investing is not only about sacrifices; investing is also about financial freedom,” Kapoor said.

According to him, wealth should not simply be accumulated but enjoyed. A substantial corpus can provide “relief, confidence, and joy,” while SWP can serve as a flexible source of regular income during early retirement, job loss or entrepreneurship.

He also argued that SWP can help elderly investors overcome the fear of running out of money, providing greater confidence that their corpus can support them over the long term.

Why Does Kapoor Believe Financial Independence Can Come Early?

When asked about his own career, Kapoor said joining the mutual fund industry was never part of his original plan. A project during his MBA at IIM Ahmedabad eventually led to his recruitment by a multinational company to establish a mutual fund.

That early opportunity allowed him to build a fund house from the ground up and participate in what he described as a “sunrise industry.”

Kapoor believes people should aim to “retire from work, not from life.” With disciplined financial planning, he suggested that individuals could potentially build a substantial corpus by 40, use SWP to generate income and then pursue meaningful interests and passions.

What Is the Biggest Lesson From 30 Years of Investing?

The conversation between Law and Kapoor traced the remarkable transformation of India’s mutual fund industry and its investors.

While rising incomes and greater awareness have created a more mature investor class, short holding periods remain a major challenge. Kapoor’s message is straightforward: start early, start small, avoid trying to time the market and give compounding enough time to work.

Most importantly, he positioned SWP as more than an investment feature—it can turn accumulated wealth into a source of financial freedom, confidence and choice.

The 50th episode of Simple Hai! ultimately reinforced a simple investing philosophy: build wealth patiently, give it time to compound, and remember that financial freedom is about enjoying the wealth you create, not merely accumulating it.

From Scarcity to Financial Freedom: Vishal Kapoor on 30 Years of India’s Mutual Fund Journey The Simple Hai!* show marked its 50th episode with a special conversation between Vivek Law and Vishal Kapoor, CEO of Bandhan AMC, on investing, compounding and financial freedom.* How Has India’s Mutual Fund Investor Changed Over Three Decades?
