If you fall under this category, it’s time to get your return filed and filed correctly. Missing the deadline doesn’t mean you lose the chance to file altogether, but it can come with additional costs and tax consequences.

Filing Your ITR? Don’t Make These Common Mistakes

Choosing the right ITR form is the first step. Taxpayers with business or professional income generally use ITR-3, while eligible taxpayers opting for the presumptive taxation scheme may use ITR-4.

Another common mistake is reporting only the amount that actually reaches your bank account. If tax is deducted at source, your gross receipts still need to be reported. For example, if you earn ₹1 lakh and ₹10,000 is deducted as TDS, your income isn’t ₹90,000 – the gross receipt is ₹1 lakh.

It’s also important to cross-check your details before submitting the return. Compare your income and TDS with your Annual Information Statement (AIS), Form 26AS, invoices and bank records. Any mismatch could lead to questions from the tax department.

Self-employed individuals should also remember to claim genuine business expenses where applicable, while avoiding personal expenses being incorrectly shown as business expenses.

And if you earn from overseas clients or have foreign assets or accounts, don’t forget to check the relevant disclosure requirements based on your residential status.

Missed August 31? You Can Still File, But It May Cost You

If you miss the deadline, you can file a belated return until December 31, 2026.

However, late filing can mean a few extra headaches. You may have to pay a late filing fee of up to ₹5,000, although the fee can be lower for taxpayers whose total income is below ₹5 lakh.

Interest may also apply if you have unpaid tax. Under Section 234A, interest is generally charged at 1% per month or part of a month on the outstanding tax amount, subject to the applicable rules.

There can also be a bigger consequence for taxpayers reporting losses. Certain business and capital losses generally cannot be carried forward if the return is filed after the applicable deadline.

Before You Hit Submit, Run This Quick Check

Think of your ITR like a final financial checklist.

Correct form? Check.
All income reported? Check.
AIS and Form 26AS reconciled? Check.
Are bank details correct? Check.
Eligible expenses and deductions included? Check.
Return e-verified after filing? Check.

The simplest takeaway: don’t just rush to file before the deadline. Take a few extra minutes to make sure the information you’re submitting is accurate.

Because when it comes to your taxes, filing on time is good – filing it right is better.

August 31, 2026, is the ITR filing deadline for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not required to get their accounts audited.
