India\u2019s economy has started FY27 on a strong note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The country\u2019s real GDP grew 7.8% in the April-June quarter of 2026-27, beating expectations and coming in higher than the Reserve Bank of India\u2019s earlier estimate of 7%. Growth in the same quarter last year stood at 6.9%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the numbers, calling the performance a reflection of India\u2019s resilience and collective strength. He also used the occasion to push back against what he described as pessimistic narratives around the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest number is particularly notable because it comes at a time when the global economy continues to face uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Geopolitical tensions, supply-chain disruptions and higher energy prices have created challenges for economies around the world. Yet, India\u2019s domestic economy has continued to show momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few sectors have played an important role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Manufacturing grew 9.2%, while financial and related services expanded strongly. Private investment also picked up, with investment growth nearly doubling to around 12%. Consumer spending remained another important support for the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The broader picture is also encouraging. Gross Value Added, or GVA, which looks at the value created across different sectors of the economy, grew 8.2% during the quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 7.8% figure is certainly stronger than expected. It was above both the RBI\u2019s 7% estimate and the 7.1% median forecast in a Reuters poll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there are still challenges ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India remains exposed to higher oil prices, global geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures and fluctuations in the rupee. The country\u2019s dependence on imported energy means that a prolonged rise in crude prices could put pressure on both inflation and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are also questions about whether this growth is translating into enough jobs and stronger household incomes. Opposition leaders have questioned whether headline GDP growth fully reflects the experience of ordinary Indians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reacting to the numbers, PM Modi said India needs to maintain this momentum and continue moving towards greater self-reliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also renewed his call for \u201cSwadeshi\u201d and \u201cVocal for Local\u201d, encouraging Indians to spend more on domestic products and keep more economic activity within the country. He even urged people to reconsider unnecessary foreign holidays, destination weddings and gold purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For now, the 7.8% number is a positive start to FY27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bigger question is whether India can sustain this pace – and, more importantly, turn strong GDP growth into more jobs, higher incomes and broader economic opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
